Emily grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. With summer break only a few days away, family and friends would attend a Memorial Day picnic at a farm not far from Omaha. Above, she's about eleven years old, helping with picnic set-up.

After high school graduation, Emily and her mother took a trip to the Bahamas via a cruise ship.
Emily, far left, attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, studying English and broadcast journalism. While in college, she pounded the pavement (in addition to going to parties) in an effort to help ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in Nebraska. It had been ratified in 1972 but the unicameral revoked it the following year.
